There are a number of conspiracy theories
The main conspiracy is of course the widely accepted story that the plane flew a constant magnetic heading due to pilot error. This took the plane over Soviet restricted airspace and was shot down.
One of the main purposes of this website is to prove that this didn’t happen but also that it could not have happened. What happened is a wide scale cover up.
Most of the conspiracy theories stem from the fact that the majority of data has been withheld, destroyed or tampered with. This includes radar traces, air traffic control recordings, disinformation etc. The official ICAO investigation was also lacking in answering many of the ambiguities.
The next conspiracy theory is that the plane was forced to land in Sakhalin and that the passengers and crew all survived and were forced into prisons or labour camps and are still alive today.
Unfortunately this theory still maintains a strong following with an active website and Facebook group. However, it is based on some reasonably plausible factors. The first report (from the CIA) after the plane went missing was that the plane had been forced to land on Sakhalin and all the passengers are safe. This is backed up by Russian radar traces showing a plane descending in a wide spiral before disappearing off radar. Hopefully this website will bring closure to this theory.
There are wilder and wilder conspiracy theories that don’t make any sense but are listed here for completeness.
The Soviets had Meaconing technology which interfered with the planes navigation and forced it off course in order to kill congressman Larry McDonald
If the Soviets had this technology they would have immediately been able to dominate and win any war. Little point just using it on one aircraft
Crab theory
There were no bodies found as the crabs in the area ate everything
The plane crashed close to Sakhalin shore and the Russian Navy removed all the bodies and disposed of them before dragging the wreck further out to sea. When civilian divers came there were no bodies to be found.
Why go to all the trouble
