Radio

At the time of the incident there was considerable differences between Russian, Japanese and US version and timing of events.

John Keppel (Fund for Constitutional Government) obtained a copy of the Narita tape recordings between KAL007, KAL015 and Narita ATC. These were analysed by Michel Brun and Dr. K. Tsuboi, the director of Iwatsu Laboratory in Kaguyama near Tokyo.

Michel Brun had previous experience in searching for lost aircraft and had the instinct to examine the recordings well after KAL007 had supposedly crashed. To his amazement he found multiple communications  that KAL 007 had sent several messages after its “final” communication at 18:27:10.

After KAL007’s 18:27:10 transmission was cut short by the alarming transmission heard on another channel, the Korean airliner simply stopped transmitting to Tokyo. However, it still communicated to KAL015 and KAL050 and possibly another aircraft.

The following radio messages are from Michel Brun’s book. At the time of writing all efforts to locate this original tape recording to validate this information have been unsuccessful. Copies of the tape must be with the fund for Constitutional Government but apparently the current employees have no access to files dating back this far. All attempts to contact Michel Brun or Dr K Tsuboi have been unsuccessful. Whilst Michel Brun has no motivation for falsifying this information we have only his and Dr Tsuboi’s word this information is correct.

Note these communications listed are in addition to those listed in the 1993 transcripts, suggesting heavy editing by the authorities. A full copy of the corrected transcript will be published elsewhere.

At 18:30:05 KAL007 transmits a single “Roger” – to who this is addressed is unknown

At 18:52:09 and 18:52:15 KAL015 transmits: “Zero Zero Seven, Zero one Five”

At 18:52:40 KAL007 transmits: “Zero one Five”

At 18:54:35 KAL015 transmits: “Zero Zero Seven, Zero one Five”

At 18:54:45 KAL007 transmits a short message in Korean: Brun does not elaborate what the message is.

At 18:54:57 KAL015 transmits” “Roger”

At 19:08:14 Tokyo transmits to KAL050: KOREAN AIR ZERO FIVE ZERO, STAND BY YOUR REQUEST. ALSO, WE HAVE REQUEST. WOULD YOU ATTEMPT CONTACT WITH AH, CALL SIGN KOREAN AIR ZERO ZERO SEVEN, AND IF YOU HAVE CONTACT WITH HIM, ADVISE HIM TO CONTACT AH, TOKYO CONTROL ONE ONE EIGHT DECIMAL NINER.

At 19:09:15 KAL050 transmits: “Ah, Korean Air Zero Zero Seven, Korean air zero five zero, one one one eight niner {VHF 118.9}”

At 19:09:34 KAL050 repeats:”Korean Air Zero Zero Seven, This is Korean air zero five zero one one two one decimal five, how do you read?”

At 19:09:51 KAL007 transmits: “Zero five….Seven”

At 19:09:54 KAL050 transmits:”Ah, Roger, Ah, Tokyo center advise you to contact ah, one one eight decimal niner, over”

At 19:10:04 KAL007 transmits in cryptic korean: ” (explains why tokyo unable to identify 007 echo on radio confusing with 015, because KAL007 was emulating)”

At 19:10:10 KAL050 transmits in Korean: “in that case you had better keep contact with KE 015”

Shortly after (exact time not noted) KAL007 responds in Korean:”we are in permanent contact with KE015″

At 19:10:47 KAL015 transmits:”Ah, Korean air zero five zero, this is Korean air zero one five, Korean air zero zero seven (now in Korean):”you can contact KE 007 at any time with our special apparatus”)

At 19:10:58 KAL050 replies in Korean. Brun does state what but presumably KAL050 asks how.

At 19:11:01 KAL015 responds in Korean with: “Just come in at (back to English) “one two three four”

At 19:11:20 KAL007 apparently responds but Brun gives no indication what was said.

At 19:12:47 Tokyo asks KAL015 to change its transponder code. According to Brun this is because KAL007 is emulating KAL015’s code.

At 19:12:55 KAL050 asks Tokyo:”Tokyo control, request cleared from present position “Direct Noho”

At 19:13:05 Tokyo repsonds:” Korean air Zero Five Zero, expect direct NOHO after reaching Flight level three niner zero, due to, uh, we have INCERFA traffic, your company Korean AIr zero zero seven. He is maintaining Flight level three five zero”

At 19:13:16 Unknown transmits:”Zero five Zero, Zero one five” – Brun asserts this may be KAL007’s last communication

At 19:13:51 KAL015 tells Tokyo:”Korean air zero five zero unable to contact Korean air zero zero seven this time” – this implies they have been communicating with KAL007 until now

At 19:13:54 A new player FB650 tells Tokyo its ETA at waypoint KADBO

At 19:14:56 two blank carrier frequencies (possibly covert means of communication or moment plane hit by missile?)

At 19:16:23 Tokyo tells KAL015: KE 015 fly direct to Niigata, change transponder code and bearing 245 to 280 deg”

At 19:24:05 Two blank carrier frequencies (possibly covert means of communication?)

At 19:28:50 FB650 informs Tokyo:”Navy Foxtrot Bravo reached KADBO”, left FL190 and left civilian radio to military for lower altitude to start a search

At 19:42:33 KAL015 asks Tokyo:”Tokyo control, this is Korean air zero five zero, did you contact, ah, radar contact, zero zero seven, over

At 19:43:00 Tokyo replies:”Negative”

At 19:44:40 Tokyo asks KAL015:”KAL015 we have not been able to contact KAL007, have you made contact?”

At 19:44:50 KAL015 responds:”Negative, take it easy”

The implication in this is KAL007 was definitely flying normally at 19:10:20. At 19:12:47 Tokyo is confused with transponder codes which implies KAL007 was still flying normally. Sometime in the next minute, possibly 19:13:16 KAL007 meets its demise without issuing a mayday.
